DATA CENTER MANAGEMENT
The computer facility is a major corporate asset and must be treated as such. Many times this asset must be displayed to business clients, creditors, vendors, management and peers within the corporation. A well managed room should look good and perform its functions flawlessly.
This is a compilation of concepts that we see exhibited In well managed data centers that we serve and maintain. The list is not all inclusive, we don't consider it will ever be complete. It is offered in a spirit of helpfulness and we invite your comment and critique.
Management
Designate one manager to own the entire physical room. One responsible person prevents multiple design or redesign efforts, therefore maintaining design consistency.
Any changes should be subject to careful review by all affected departments. Plans should be reviewed by the company's property and facility managers.
Implementing a hardware preventative maintenance schedules helps eliminate crisis situations. It cuts down on unnecessary and questionable traffic.
Access to the computer room should be limited to those trained for the specific task required and also all environmental controls.
Attitudes like "So what , the night shift will just ...." must be thwarted and eliminated by disciplined leadership. The Data Center is the MOST IMPORTANT room in the company, it has enormous propensity to collect dirt and clutter. It takes strong leadership to create a crisp clean corporate image in this vital space. The leadership must come from the top and be reflected in every person with access to the data center.
Security factors must be well defined, monitored and recorded.
Safety issues involving traffic, power, equipment use, lighting, etc. must be clearly stated and consistently implemented.
Communication channels should be formalized to prevent those unnecessary and dangerous oversights that can easily occur.
Emergency procedures and plans for all possible events should be implemented , tested and drilled.
