The Problem

Computer rooms and switch rooms grow and divide and, as they do, getting your bearings based on equipment and wall locations becomes more difficult. Also, just because you know the exact tile under which something is buried, doesn't mean that you can convey that location to a third party.

It is a very simple and inexpensive thing to do, but once done it brings precision to locating things forever. Wall coordinates corresponding to your floor plan layout are mounted unobtrusively about six inces below the ceiling line and centered on each tile row. Now, anyone, even the first time visitor to your room, can locate the tile "J-34" exactly!

We have seen all kinds of schemes for keeping track of under floor smoke detectors; red dots, black magic marker in the tile corner, etc. Under floor smoke detectors are usually installed in a pattern and it won't take long to memorize a pattern with coordinates. Eg. Rows F, L and R at 6, 12 and 18.

When you and your people/vendors are talking about two different locations on the floor, bad things can happen. With rooms changing every day, with multiple vendors in the racks and with the same type of equipment from rack to rack, talking precisely about the location of a problem or need is essential.
